During January we have a CAP reunion that serves as an annual
gathering of MAACS/CAP Alumni and current CAP students in
Bridgeport. Donors and Board Members are invited to catch
up with students and see the progress they have all made.
A handful of attending students are recognized for their
hard work and perseverance.
In May we honor amazing educators and leaders in Bridgeport
at the Inspiration Awards Event. Usually eight (8)
outstanding teachers who demonstrate leadership in education.
Each recipient receives a Tiffany Crystal Apple and a
$1,000 certificate entitling them to professional
development or for classroom/student enrichment.
The Theodore & Margaret Beard Award is given to honor
two (2) Bridgeport teachers for their great instructional
skills, and passion for student inspiration. Each receives
a $20,000 gift payable over 3 years. The Elizabeth
Pfriem recipient will receive a handcrafted golden apple
lapel pin. It was designed as a special award to honor one
of the founders of the BPEF, Elizabeth Pfriem. Last but not
least the George Bellinger Award is presented to a principal
in the Bridgeport Public Schools who best replicates the
ability of George Bellinger to foster & recognize good
leadership. The First Inspiration Award was held in 1993.
Towards the end of Spring, students from Bassick, Central
and Fairchild Wheeler Magnet High School who were in MAACS
for a minimum of two (2) years will attend Housatonic
Community College for a one day CAP Workshop. At the
Workshop, students will engage with one another while
working with college professors and volunteers. This
program was created in 2003 to ensure that MAACS graduates
who were admitted to college graduate from college.
